The Protean Voice Intensive – finding Form in Text and Song
with Kevin Crawford and Caroline Boersma (Cellist)

This summer workshop celebrates the protean nature of the voice: its capacity to reveal to us a multiplicity of sounds, that evoke emotion, summon up character, and invite us to communicate. Join us in discovering this wealth of expression, that lends depth and dynamics to our creative experience. Our work will converge towards two projects: a Solo Song of your choice and a collaborative venture inspired by extracts from The Circus of the Sun a poem by the American poet Robert Lax. Caroline brings her finely tuned ear to this work, helping us to balance musicality and verbal muscle.

The workshop will include:

• Daily warm-up sequences designed to open up body, voice and spirit
• Solo and group vocal research, that extends range and elasticity
• The challenge of text work: how to expand interpretation
• The dynamic flow of musical imagination
• Solo and collaborative creative work

NOTE: We are looking for a small group of students (6-10) who have some experience in voicework and want to take their practice further. As some of the participants will be coming from outside Italy we would ask that you confirm participation  before 30th May latest. A deposit will then be requested to secure your place. Questo laboratorio estivo celebra la natura proteiforme della voce: la sua capacità di rivelarci una molteplicità di suoni che evocano emozioni, richiamano personaggi e ci invitano a comunicare. Unitevi a noi per scoprire questa ricchezza espressiva, che dona profondità e dinamismo alla nostra esperienza creativa.
Il nostro lavoro confluirà in due progetti: una Canzone Solista a vostra scelta e un progetto collettivo ispirato a estratti di The Circus of the Sun, una poesia del poeta americano Robert Lax. Caroline porterà a questo lavoro il suo orecchio finemente allenato, aiutandoci a trovare un equilibrio tra musicalità e forza espressiva della parola.
Il workshop includerà:

• Sequenze quotidiane di riscaldamento pensate per aprire corpo, voce e spirito
• Ricerca vocale individuale e di gruppo, volta ad ampliare estensione ed elasticità
• La sfida del lavoro sul testo: come espandere l’interpretazione
• Il flusso dinamico dell’immaginazione musicale
• Lavoro creativo solista e collaborativo

NOTA: Stiamo cercando un piccolo gruppo di studenti (6-10) che abbiano qualche esperienza nel lavoro vocale e vogliano approfondire la loro pratica. Poiché alcuni partecipanti arriveranno da fuori Italia, chiediamo di confermare la partecipazione entro e non oltre il 30 maggio 2025. Successivamente, verrà richiesto un acconto per garantire il posto.

Cet atelier d’été célèbre la nature protéiforme de la voix : sa capacité à nous révéler une multiplicité de sons, qui évoquent l’émotion, font surgir des personnages et nous invitent à communiquer. Rejoignez-nous pour découvrir cette richesse d’expression, qui apporte profondeur et dynamisme à notre expérience créative. Notre travail confluera vers deux projets : une Chanson Solo de votre choix et une création collective inspirée d’extraits de The Circus of the Sun, un poème du poète américain Robert Lax. Caroline apporte à ce travail son oreille finement aiguisée, nous aidant à trouver un équilibre entre musicalité et puissance verbale.
